The Calgary Escola de Samba teaches and performs a variety of Brazilian music and dance styles such as the Samba of Rio’s Carnival, funky Samba Reggae and Afro-samba beats of Bahia.
Our classes are for adults and youths aged 14+. New students: Please call us before coming. JANUARY 12 ALL CLASSES CANCELLED DRUM SCHEDULE INTRO TO SAMBA DRUMMING CLASS Thursdays 6 - 7pm (Highwood Community Centre) Beginner technique, and introduction to the basic grooves and breaks needed to comfortably play in the Community Bateria. Instruments: surdo, caixa, repinique, tamborim, chocalho, timbal, triangulo, pandeiro, cuica. Open to new players as well as experienced players who wish to review or try new instruments. Learn what Samba is all about! COMMUNITY BATERIA REHEARSAL Thursdays 7 - 9pm (Highwood Community Centre) Our lively, fun and supportive Community Bateria is open to all upon completion of Intro class goals. Inspired by the blocos and samba schools of Brazil, members are from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, beginners to seasoned performers, all working together to create a great sound. We play parades, festivals and surprise street shows. Our biggest, noisiest group! SUNDAY SECTIONALS One Sunday per month 12:30 - 4:30pm (Highwood Community Centre) 2012 dates: Jan 8, Feb 5, Mar 4, April 1, May 6, June 3 Open to full members of the Community Bateria for further instruction on their performing instruments. DRUM FEES Your first class is free! Come see what Samba is all about. Drop-in: $15 (Can be used for intro classes or Community Bateria rehearsals upon completion of intro class goals. Use of instruments included.) Intro class 4-session pack: $40 (Good for any four Intro classes) Community Bateria Member: $60 per month (plus $15 annual membership fee and $25 school T-shirt) Full member benefits including classes, rehearsals, sectionals, performance opportunities, use of instruments, resources, and instrument purchase discounts. Family discount: 10% off for two or more members Drum/dance member combo: $80 per month Member fees due on the first day of each month. Learn Afro-Brazilian and Samba dance moves and choreography for performing with the Community Bateria at festivals and street shows. Come prepared to sweat and have a great time! Open to new and experienced dancers. OPEN LEVEL BRAZILIAN DANCE CLASS Saturdays 4:30 - 5:30pm (Evergreen Community Studios, Currie Barracks) Learn Afro-Brazilian and Samba dance moves and choreography for performing with the Community Bateria at festivals and street shows.
